IN WHAT WAS certainly a case of the winner takes it all, Spain overcame Germany in the semi-finals of the Uefa U17 European Championships, a match decided by Uefa’s new ABBA penalty shootout system.
Instead of the traditional system of A followed by B until a winner is decided, the new format is actually ABBA with the team taking the second penalty also taking the third and the team taking the fourth also taking the fifth, etc.
Last night, Spain went first and scored before Erik Majetschak missed. However, because of the new format, the Germans had a chance to make amends immediately and scored to put the pressure back on Spain.
Lars Lukas Mai eventually hit the crossbar which allowed Spain reach the final where they’ll play Ireland’s conquerors, England.
